Cosmic Connections

 Adler After Dark
“Science and Music”
Date: Thursday, May 19, 2011
Time: 6:00 – 10:00 p.m.

Join us (and a few hundred others!) at the wildley popular “Adler After Dark”. This is a once a month phenomonom that I’ve been DYING to see!!! I’ve never been to the planitarium (shame on me, I know) and can’t think of a more exciting experience or a better group to go with than this!

We’ll be meeting as a group at 6:15, but feel free to join us when ever you are able to arrive. I’ll have my cell phone on all night and can text you (or call you) with our location. There is no “singles” theme to this event, we’ll just be mingling as a group, though I will have name tags for us to wear to help identify our singles group from the rest of the crowd.

If you pay online, your ticket will be at the front desk/will call area if you arrive after 6:15. Otherwise, feel free to pay at the door, but I can’t gaurentee a spot for the 8pm performance or to see the Doane observatory with out a prepurchased ticket from me.

Our group will see the 8pm performance of the Bailey-Salgado project and we will have group seating. This performance lasts about an hour. After wards we’ll be mingling around exhibits over cocktails.

We will be seeing the Doane Observatory after 8:45 as a group. The exact time is still TBD, but as soon as I get confirmation from the event planner over there I’ll let you know!

Music by DJ D-Rek
D-Rek has regularly rocked crowds throughout Chicago, Detroit and Miami, and has performed alongside national recording artists Talib Kweli, Slum Village, Bahamadia, J-Live and Mayer Hawthorne. He infuses a diverse range of music into his eclectic live sets. He currently hosts The Getdown, a free monthly all-out dance party at Cole’s Bar in Logan Square. Tonight, in tribute to Tom Bailey’s musical past in the Thompson Twins and current electronica-infused music, DJ D-Rek will incorporate New Wave and 80’s pop into his funk-heavy rotation.

Science and Music with the Bailey-Salgado Project
Universe Theater

8:00 pm performance – The Adler is proud to host the U.S. premiere of the Bailey-Salgado Project, an audiovisual ensemble formed in 2010 by musician and composer Tom Bailey (Thompson Twins/Babble, International Observer) and Adler Planetarium astronomer and visual artist Dr. José Francisco Salgado.  This duo combines music with photography, video and animations to create multimedia works that showcase the beauty of the physical world.  Their first work about the night sky, entitled Sidereal Motion, was previewed in Bath, England and San Juan, Puerto Rico to great acclaim.  Sidereal Motion will be one of several works performed live at Adler After Dark.

Cocktail of the night:

(Cash Bar)Pink Lemonade Cocktail
Something light, pink and effervescent in a nod to the New Wave music and hits of the 80s.  Remember John Hughes classic 1980s flicks, big hair and tight-rolled jeans?  This cocktail with vodka, pink lemonade and a splash of soda garnished with a lemon slice recalls the bygone era of the bubbly, over-the-top 80s.
